The likelihood of finding a buyer for your home is at its best point at any time in the past decade, new research suggests.

Nearly seven out of 10 homes for sale – 68 per cent – successfully found a buyer between June 2020 and June 2021, according to Rightmove.

It is up from 41 per cent in 2012, and the highest percentage in any year during the past 10 years, the property website says.

The data suggests that the market is particularly hot in Scotland, while London locations are lagging.

Between 2012 and early 2020, just over half - at 53 per cent - of homes typically found a buyer, according to Rightmove

The analysis of more than 13million property listings on Rightmove’s website tracked the journey of a property, from initially being put on the market through to being sold subject to contract.

Those sales that fell through and went on to secure a buyer again were only counted once as part of the analysis, the property website explained.

Between 2012 and early 2020, just over half – at 53 per cent – of homes typically found a buyer.

Rightmove said that the remaining 47 per cent were either withdrawn from sale or stayed on the market.

Scotland leads the way with 89 per cent of homes successfully finding a buyer, compared to 48 per cent in London.

Tim Bannister, of Rightmove, said: ‘There’s been a much greater chance of a seller finding a buyer over the past year, which really highlights the sheer number of people who have been determined to move.

‘While the long-term average shows that typically around half of properties sell, the increase in 2021 reflects the frenzied buyer activity we’ve seen in the current market, driven by multiple factors such as pent up demand and changing priorities.

‘This efficiency in the market means agents are operating on limited stock, and they need more homes to satisfy all types of buyers.

‘We’ve seen from previous research that Scotland often contains the most likely areas to find a buyer, and London the least, however the broader numbers are reflective of the trend we’ve been seeing all year, which is that buyers have widened their scope, and the popularity of every area in Britain is increasing.’

It comes amid a red hot property market, with Nationwide reporting this week that the average value of a home in Britain has risen by around £24,500 between July last year and the end of June this year.

The average cost of a home now stands at £244,229, it said. However, this is a drop from £245,432 in June, following the end of the stamp duty holiday.

Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist, said: ‘ Buyers had rushed to complete deals before the deadline, with the number of housing market transactions soaring to a record high of almost 200,000 in June, which is around twice the typical monthly number before the pandemic.’

Britain’s petrol supply ‘improving’ as Johnson denies Brexit is root cause

Voice Of EU

Published

on

Britain’s petrol retailers have said the supply to the pumps is improving but more than one in three filling stations were out of fuel on Tuesday and the government predicted that queues would continue for a number of days.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said the situation was stabilising and called on motorists to hold back from buying more fuel than they need. “We are starting to see situation improve, supplies coming back on in the normal way,” he said. “I urge everyone to go about their business in the normal way.”

Although the supply of petrol to the pumps has improved since the weekend, when more than two in three filling stations had run out, there were long queues at forecourts across the country on Tuesday. Labour leader Keir Starmer joined calls from unions for key workers to be given priority access to fuel stations to ensure that they could continue to get to work.

“The government has reduced the country to chaos as we crash from crisis to crisis. And the government is not gripping this. I spoke to the haulage sector this morning, to the businesses that are absolutely in the middle of this, and they are beyond frustrated.

“And these were their words – they said, it’s a government that is denying there’s a problem, then blaming somebody else and then coming up with a half-baked plan. What I would do is give priority to key workers this week, and I would issue enough visas for lorry drivers for long enough. At the moment, there aren’t enough visas,” he told the BBC.

Issuing visas

The government has agreed to issue 5,000 three-month visas for lorry drivers from the EU but Britain needs tens of thousands of drivers to make up for those who have left the country, retired or are awaiting driving tests. Frank Huster, chief executive of the German Freight Forwarding and Logistics Association, said drivers who left Britain after Brexit would not be tempted back with short-term visas.

“The labour market on the European continent has gratefully accepted these workers – they are now lost to re-employment in the United Kingdom, ” he told Reuters. “The new UK visa regulations – especially the temporary ones – will not change this.”

Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford said the visa scheme was derisory and exploitative and showed the arrogance of Mr Johnson’s government.

“It is hard to imagine a government that has made a more derisory attempt to solve a problem of their own creation,” he told the Senedd in Cardiff. “The idea that people are going to be willing to uproot themselves and come back to this country for a matter of weeks only to be told by the UK government they will be discarded again on Christmas Eve when they no longer have a use for them is simply … the arrogance of it is breathtaking.”

Mr Johnson has dismissed that there is any connection between Britain’s supply chain problems and Brexit but he indicated on Tuesday that he expected shortages to continue for a number of months.

“What we want to do is to make sure we have all the preparations needed to get through to Christmas and beyond, not just in supply for petrol stations but all parts of the supply chain,” he said.

“We want to make sure that as the economy continues to recover and we continue to see the global recovery suck in demand of all kinds, like the lorry drivers, that the UK is prepared.”

Kylie was named Forbes’ youngest ‘self-made’ billionaire in 2019 then again in 2020.

In 2019, the star unseated Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, 35, as the youngest-ever self-made billionaire – he was 23 when he made his first billion 13 years ago in 2008

However the publication declared Kylie was not actually a billionaire in May 2020 as they claimed that she fabricated financial documents to support the false claim that she was.

In a detailed report based on public financial disclosures, Forbes at the time accused the family of creating a ‘web of lies’ and says Kylie, 22, has inflated the size of her business and success. The publication accused her of ‘lying about company figures and forging tax returns’ to be dubbed a billionaire.

Kylie later blasted the publication on Twitter as she wrote: ‘what am i even waking up to. i thought this was a reputable site..

‘all i see are a number of inaccurate statements and unproven assumptions lol. i’ve never asked for any title or tried to lie my way there EVER. period’

Meanwhile, Kylie kept her look simple for the Vogue video as she sported a long beige coat cut out at the sides to show off her body over a white cropped top and blue jeans.

Her raven-colored tresses were worn down flowing over her shoulder as her make-up was topped off with dark lip.

Many of the 73 questions were about Kylie’s family life as she was even asked to describe her sisters and mother in one word.

She said Kim Kardashian is ‘loyal’, Khloe is ‘gracious’, Kourtney is ‘very loving’, Kendall’s ‘confident’, and lastly mom Kris is ‘strong’. Kylie also added that the daughter most like her mom is herself.

‘Pandemic bonus’ will not impact FG’s budget plans – Tánaiste

Voice Of EU

Published

on

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said he is not concerned that the cost of a “pandemic bonus” could threaten his party’s plans for a tax and welfare package in the upcoming budget.

He also said the Government is exploring the possibility that tax credits, along with an extra bank holiday, could be used to reward retail staff for their work during the Covid-19 emergency.

Mr Varadkar said a mooted extra bank holiday would also be linked to remembrance of the more than 5,000 people who died from Covid-19 in Ireland.

Mr Varadkar, Minister for Enterprise and Trade, made the remarks during a trip to Washington DC where he is meeting his Biden administration counterparts and promoting Ireland as a location for inward investment.

Health workers and gardaí have sought inclusion in any pandemic bonus scheme and Mr Varadkar suggested last week that the wider civil service should benefit too.

Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath has warned that the cost of a bonus for all public sector workers in the shape of two weeks’ extra holidays could be in excess of €1 billion.

Asked if he has any concern that Fine Gael’s wish to see tax and welfare packages included in the budget could be threatened by the cost of a pandemic bonus, Mr Varadkar replied: “No, I don’t.”

He said: “I think if there is going to be a pandemic bonus – and I think there should be – it’s likely to fall into this financial year in terms of cost.

“It would ideally be paid before the end of this year, therefore would not impact on the budget for next year.”

Speaking on Monday, Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien said the bonus could take “various forms”.

“We don’t want a situation whereby public and private are pitted against each other. That’s not what it is; this is about recognising incredible work that happened in this country right the way through the pandemic. And many people right the way through from health to transport to retail really, really stepped up and went above and beyond, so that’s something that will be discussed further at Cabinet this week.”

Meanwhile, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan suggested bus and retail workers should be considered for any pandemic bonus.
