You might have thought having a Chelsea pad worth more than £75 million would be enough for most property tycoons, but not for Nick Candy.

I can disclose that Candy and his pop star wife, Holly Valance, have splashed out well over £10 million on a Grade II‑listed mansion in Oxfordshire.

They will be a short drive from trendy private members’ club Soho Farmhouse, where Prince Harry courted Meghan.

How guitar guru Beck gave Depp a silver lining

With his acrimonious divorce from actress Amber Heard, and their bitter court room showdown in London last summer, Hollywood star Johnny Depp suffered the biggest setback of his glittering career.

Now, however, I hear he’s quietly planning his comeback — right here in Britain.

The 58-year-old star of Fantastic Beasts and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory has been taken under the wing of British rock legend Jeff Beck.

The Hi Ho Silver Lining guitarist, 77, who’s so talented he had each of his fingers insured for £700,000 in 2010, has secretly been hosting Depp at his Riverhall country estate in Wadhurst, East Sussex, where they’ve been writing and recording together in Beck’s studio. Depp is an accomplished guitarist himself.

‘They’ve been collaborating on material for Jeff’s next album,’ reveals a source close to Depp. ‘It’s been great for Johnny to get back to his first true love, which is music.

‘Jeff has been a great friend to Johnny during a very difficult time, and being away from Hollywood has been exactly what Johnny needed.

‘He wants to take a step back from everything and focus on a comeback through music.’

Eight-time Grammy Award winner Jeff, who has been called ‘one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock’ by Rolling Stone magazine, recorded a cover of John Lennon’s Isolation with Depp last year, intended to help people cope with life in lockdown.

In 2019 they played together at the Crossroads Music Festival in Dallas, Texas, for Eric Clapton’s charity, then did a short tour of the U.S.

Depp has previously featured on songs by Oasis, Iggy Pop, and Aerosmith, as well as on records by his ex-girlfriend, singer Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children. In 2015, he formed the super group, Hollywood Vampires, with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry.

‘Johnny hopes to return to films eventually,’ adds the source, ‘but it’s music first.’

Boogie-woogie pianist Jools Holland is learning to sing lullabies. The Later . . . with Jools Holland host has become a grandfather at the age of 63.

‘I am very pleased that I now have a wonderful grandson, Gabriel,’ he says. His musician daughter, Mabel Ray, 30, is the proud mum.

Queen’s Windsor gong show for late Duke’s loyal page

The Queen is making sure Prince Philip’s most steadfast former aides feel rewarded.

I hear that she invited the Duke of Edinburgh’s loyal page, William Henderson, to Windsor Castle this week to collect his gong.

His appointment as a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order was announced on what would have been Philip’s 100th birthday.

Henderson was among those who took part in the funeral procession, walking behind the coffin.

Known for his sarcastic quips when required to report on the love lives of the Royal Family, waggish news anchor Simon McCoy seems to be secretly obsessed with the Windsors.

‘If I were invisible, I would go into Highgrove and stand by the phone to listen to any conversation Prince Charles might have with Harry,’ admits McCoy, who recently moved from the BBC to its new rival channel, GB News.

‘I feel desperately sorry for Charles — I really do. Family difficulties are bad enough without one of you bleating about it to the Press all the time.’

Creating a buzz with Angelina the Queen Bee

There’s a buzz about Angelina Jolie, but it’s nothing to do with her film career.

The actress brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to the new French Apidology Observatory, in Sainte-Baume, where she presented its first graduates with their diplomas.

Jolie, 46, who’s recently been seen out with her British ex-husband Jonny Lee Miller, was there because she’s involved in the Women for Bees project, which aims to encourage women to become beekeepers.

Clearly, there’s only one Queen Bee.

Paymaster General Penny Mordaunt, who starred on TV diving show Splash, will be demonstrating her water skills at the local pool rather than heading off to the Med this summer.

‘I’ll be staying in my constituency and spending time at my local lido,’ the MP for Portsmouth North tells me at the Westminster launch party for her book, Greater: Britain After The Storm, which she’s co-written with Chris Lewis. ‘I’ve earned that — I went to great lengths to save it.’

The forecast is hotting up with Carol’s exotic secret

This could liven up those dull BBC meteorological reports: weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has revealed a secret skill.

‘I can belly-dance,’ whispers the former Strictly contestant.

‘It is actually quite hard, but I learned to do it when I was a student travelling in Turkey and Greece.’

The Scottish hotelier’s daughter, 59, adds: I can’t claim to be very good at it — but I do at least have the belly for it these days.’

Britain’s petrol supply ‘improving’ as Johnson denies Brexit is root cause

Voice Of EU

Published

on

Britain’s petrol retailers have said the supply to the pumps is improving but more than one in three filling stations were out of fuel on Tuesday and the government predicted that queues would continue for a number of days.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said the situation was stabilising and called on motorists to hold back from buying more fuel than they need. “We are starting to see situation improve, supplies coming back on in the normal way,” he said. “I urge everyone to go about their business in the normal way.”

Although the supply of petrol to the pumps has improved since the weekend, when more than two in three filling stations had run out, there were long queues at forecourts across the country on Tuesday. Labour leader Keir Starmer joined calls from unions for key workers to be given priority access to fuel stations to ensure that they could continue to get to work.

“The government has reduced the country to chaos as we crash from crisis to crisis. And the government is not gripping this. I spoke to the haulage sector this morning, to the businesses that are absolutely in the middle of this, and they are beyond frustrated.

“And these were their words – they said, it’s a government that is denying there’s a problem, then blaming somebody else and then coming up with a half-baked plan. What I would do is give priority to key workers this week, and I would issue enough visas for lorry drivers for long enough. At the moment, there aren’t enough visas,” he told the BBC.

Issuing visas

The government has agreed to issue 5,000 three-month visas for lorry drivers from the EU but Britain needs tens of thousands of drivers to make up for those who have left the country, retired or are awaiting driving tests. Frank Huster, chief executive of the German Freight Forwarding and Logistics Association, said drivers who left Britain after Brexit would not be tempted back with short-term visas.

“The labour market on the European continent has gratefully accepted these workers – they are now lost to re-employment in the United Kingdom, ” he told Reuters. “The new UK visa regulations – especially the temporary ones – will not change this.”

Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford said the visa scheme was derisory and exploitative and showed the arrogance of Mr Johnson’s government.

“It is hard to imagine a government that has made a more derisory attempt to solve a problem of their own creation,” he told the Senedd in Cardiff. “The idea that people are going to be willing to uproot themselves and come back to this country for a matter of weeks only to be told by the UK government they will be discarded again on Christmas Eve when they no longer have a use for them is simply … the arrogance of it is breathtaking.”

Mr Johnson has dismissed that there is any connection between Britain’s supply chain problems and Brexit but he indicated on Tuesday that he expected shortages to continue for a number of months.

“What we want to do is to make sure we have all the preparations needed to get through to Christmas and beyond, not just in supply for petrol stations but all parts of the supply chain,” he said.

“We want to make sure that as the economy continues to recover and we continue to see the global recovery suck in demand of all kinds, like the lorry drivers, that the UK is prepared.”

Billionaire Kylie Jenner showcased her growing baby bump in a white cropped top and even gave a tour of her massive new $36.5million luxury home as she took part in Vogue’s highly popular 73 Questions video series.

The pregnant 24-year-old mogul talked a lot about her famous family and revealed that she and Travis Scott have not chosen a name for their second child as they are waiting to find out the gender.

Like several of the other episodes of the series before it, the star casually walked around her multi-million dollar property in Holmby Hills – which has been referred to as a ‘resort compound’ – while an interviewer could be heard behind the camera asking several questions.

Toward the end of the clip artist and producer Joe Sabia congratulated Kylie on the pregnancy before asking if she and the 30-year-old Houston-native rapper have chosen a name.

Kylie – who revealed she was pregnant with an Instagram video earlier this month – replied: ‘Well, we need to find out the gender first and we decided to wait.’

Their first child, three-year-old daughter Stormi, was featured throughout the clip as Kylie revealed her first word was ‘dada.’

Kylie was named Forbes’ youngest ‘self-made’ billionaire in 2019 then again in 2020.

In 2019, the star unseated Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, 35, as the youngest-ever self-made billionaire – he was 23 when he made his first billion 13 years ago in 2008

However the publication declared Kylie was not actually a billionaire in May 2020 as they claimed that she fabricated financial documents to support the false claim that she was.

In a detailed report based on public financial disclosures, Forbes at the time accused the family of creating a ‘web of lies’ and says Kylie, 22, has inflated the size of her business and success. The publication accused her of ‘lying about company figures and forging tax returns’ to be dubbed a billionaire.

Kylie later blasted the publication on Twitter as she wrote: ‘what am i even waking up to. i thought this was a reputable site..

‘all i see are a number of inaccurate statements and unproven assumptions lol. i’ve never asked for any title or tried to lie my way there EVER. period’

Meanwhile, Kylie kept her look simple for the Vogue video as she sported a long beige coat cut out at the sides to show off her body over a white cropped top and blue jeans.

Her raven-colored tresses were worn down flowing over her shoulder as her make-up was topped off with dark lip.

Many of the 73 questions were about Kylie’s family life as she was even asked to describe her sisters and mother in one word.

She said Kim Kardashian is ‘loyal’, Khloe is ‘gracious’, Kourtney is ‘very loving’, Kendall’s ‘confident’, and lastly mom Kris is ‘strong’. Kylie also added that the daughter most like her mom is herself.

Jenner made a record-breaking $15million purchase on 5 acres of land in Hidden Hills in May 2020.

$2.7million Calabasas ‘starter home’

Jenner picked up her first home while just 17-years-old in 2015. She chose the location because it was close to sisters Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian. It’s reported that she dig extensive renovations in order to satisfy her ‘edgy’ tastes.

When the house sold to entrepreneur Nikki Eslami in 2017, Kylie is said to have made a $500k profit.

Jenner originally purchased this vacant piece of land in 2017 with plans to make a garden and horse farm but things never came to fruition.

But she decided to ditch the plot about 10-months later, still making a profit as she offloaded the undeveloped land for $5.35million the following August.

‘Pandemic bonus’ will not impact FG’s budget plans – Tánaiste

Voice Of EU

Published

on

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said he is not concerned that the cost of a “pandemic bonus” could threaten his party’s plans for a tax and welfare package in the upcoming budget.

He also said the Government is exploring the possibility that tax credits, along with an extra bank holiday, could be used to reward retail staff for their work during the Covid-19 emergency.

Mr Varadkar said a mooted extra bank holiday would also be linked to remembrance of the more than 5,000 people who died from Covid-19 in Ireland.

Mr Varadkar, Minister for Enterprise and Trade, made the remarks during a trip to Washington DC where he is meeting his Biden administration counterparts and promoting Ireland as a location for inward investment.

Health workers and gardaí have sought inclusion in any pandemic bonus scheme and Mr Varadkar suggested last week that the wider civil service should benefit too.

Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath has warned that the cost of a bonus for all public sector workers in the shape of two weeks’ extra holidays could be in excess of €1 billion.

Asked if he has any concern that Fine Gael’s wish to see tax and welfare packages included in the budget could be threatened by the cost of a pandemic bonus, Mr Varadkar replied: “No, I don’t.”

He said: “I think if there is going to be a pandemic bonus – and I think there should be – it’s likely to fall into this financial year in terms of cost.

“It would ideally be paid before the end of this year, therefore would not impact on the budget for next year.”

Speaking on Monday, Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien said the bonus could take “various forms”.

“We don’t want a situation whereby public and private are pitted against each other. That’s not what it is; this is about recognising incredible work that happened in this country right the way through the pandemic. And many people right the way through from health to transport to retail really, really stepped up and went above and beyond, so that’s something that will be discussed further at Cabinet this week.”

Meanwhile, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan suggested bus and retail workers should be considered for any pandemic bonus.
